Ideata dal chimico russo Dmitrij Mendeleev nel 1869 – ma anche, contemporaneamente e indipendentemente, dal chimico tedesco Julius Lothar Meyer (1830 – 1895) – inizialmente contava numerosi spazi vuoti, previsti per gli elementi che sarebbero stati scoperti in futuro, alcuni nella seconda metà del 1900.

In onore del chimico russo, la tavola periodica degli elementi è anche detta tavola periodica di Mendeleev.

Della fascinazione della tavola periodica parlano almeno 2 bei libri che vi raccomando di leggere, se non l’avete già fatto, Il sistema periodico di Primo Levi e Zio Tungsteno. Ricordi di un’infanzia chimica (Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a Chemical Boyhood) di Oliver Sachs.

È stata proprio la fascinazione del libro di Sachs a spingere Theo Gray, uno dei co-fondatori di Wolfram Research, a costruirsi una tavola-tavola, fatta di legno e con piccoli ripostigli sotto ogni coperchietto. Tutta fatta e popolata da lui nel tempo libero.

In November a minority of agitated European politicians, aghast at the turmoil on government bond markets, were questioning if the eurozone would survive intact beyond Christmas. Now there is no such sense of panic. The ocean is far from calm and more storms lie ahead. But Europe’s policymakers have at least ensured that the good ship Monetary Union will not capsize in the near future.

Several factors have contributed to stabilising the eurozone over the past three months. First, Mario Draghi, the European Central Bank president, introduced a programme of large-scale cheap credit for banks. This reduced stress in Europe’s financial system and lowered borrowing costs for governments. It is noteworthy that the ECB felt no need last week to buy sovereign bonds on the secondary market.

Second, the replacement of the feckless Silvio Berlusconi with the reformist Mario Monti as Italy’s prime minister calmed investors’ fears that the debt crisis would engulf the eurozone’s third biggest economy and trigger the euro’s demise. Mr Monti is showing much courage in confronting Italy’s domestic economic rigidities. Penso che non avrei mai letto questo libro – anzi forse non ne sarei mai venuto a conoscenza – se non fosse stato per la recensione che ne ha fatto .mau. sul suo blog.

Il minimo che posso fare è mandarvi là.

Ho deciso di leggerlo perché il tema mi incuriosisce molto (sono abbastanza convinto delle responsabilità del Vaticano nella fuga di tanti criminali nazisti), non mi spiace leggere un romanzo piuttosto che un saggio (quando gli argomenti sono controversi, il romanzo consente maggiore libertà di formulare ipotesi ardite) e coccolo il mio anticlericalismo leggendo opere in cui i preti sono perfidi e fanatici (confesso, mi sono divertito persino leggendo Il Codice da Vinci).

La recensione di .mau. – che dopo aver letto il libro condivido appieno – dava un giudizio molto negativo su un aspetto specifico:

[...] tutte le schermaglie a base di citazioni di massime da parte di un protagonista, seguite dalle relative controcitazioni del suo interlocutore sono davvero pesanti, e mi hanno tolto il piacere della lettura.

Quando ho cominciato a leggere ho pensato: “che fanatico, .mau.”; anche perché all’inizio l’azione prevale sui dialoghi e le schermaglie si notano meno. Anzi, la prima massima che ho trovata l’ho addirittura condivisa su facebook. Era questa:

«[...] Ritengo che l’esercito, in questo caso le SS, richieda la disciplina per fare l’impensabile. La politica invece richiede l’abilità di far fare agli altri l’impensabile al posto nostro. In questo momento ci servono allo stesso modo sia la politica sia l’esercito.» [498; il riferimento è alle posizioni sul Kindle]

Ma ben presto il gioco si fa peso e tetro, come direbbe Guccini:

«Mio caro figliolo… perché trionfi il male, basta solo che i buoni non facciano niente e, in questo, la Germania e i tedeschi sono stati maestri. I buoni hanno lasciato la nazione in mano ai cattivi e quella concessione ha generato il male che alla fine ha distrutto tutti: buoni e cattivi. Qualcuno un giorno ha detto che una cattiva causa, e il Terzo Reich lo era, verrà difesa sempre con cattivi mezzi da uomini cattivi.»
«Sì, papà, ma Plutarco ha detto pure che l’omissione del bene non è meno riprovevole dell’attuazione del male. Chi non punisce il male, in un certo senso ordina che esso venga fatto; e noi due, nel momento in cui aiutiamo tutta questa gente a sfuggire alla giustizia, siamo già parte di quello stesso male che loro hanno generato.» [3744]

Magari cose nemmeno sbagliate, ma capirete che 444 pagine così possano venire a noia. Soltanto di rado Frattini cita l’autore della citazione.

In genere, però le massime sono spacciate come farina del sacco dei personaggi, che finiscono per parlare tutti allo stesso modo. E se queste schermaglie in punta di citazione dotta sono credibili per preti e prelati della curia vaticana, lo sono meno in bocca a un sergente delle SS o a un banchiere svizzero o a una spia americana.

[...] la violenza è l’ultima risorsa dell’incompetente. [5430]

[...] spesso la politica diventa l’arte di tradire gli interessi reali e legittimi, creandone altri immaginari e ingiusti. [5512]

Insomma, alla fine non si sfugge alla sensazione che Frattini abbia scritto il romanzo con un libro di storia alla sua destra (magari la sua stessa opera sui servizi segreti vaticani) e un tesauro di citazioni alla sua sinistra. E nel saccheggiare a piene mani dall’una e dall’altra parte abbia finito per soffocare la sua creatura.

Presented in the form of a Soviet F1 Hand Grenade, the Transparency Grenade is an iconic cure for these frustrations, making the process of leaking information from closed meetings as easy as pulling a pin.

Equipped with a tiny computer, microphone and powerful wireless antenna, the Transparency Grenade captures network traffic and audio at the site and securely and anonymously streams it to a dedicated server where it is mined for information. The body is made of Tusk2700T, a highly resilient translucent resin, printed from a stereo-lithography model made by CAD designer Ralph Witthuhn based on a replica Soviet F1 Hand Grenade. Metal parts were hand-crafted from 925/1000 sterling silver by Susanne Stauch, complete with operational trigger mechanism, screw-on locking caps and engraving.

Android application

Thanks to a generous donation from Scott Robinson (@quadhome), development of an Android application is underway, for rooted Android devices. This will mimic some of the functionality of the grenade, with the TG program running ‘invisibly’ on their phone as a backgrounded application. A GUI will be provided for configuration. It will allow upload using a 2048 bit SSH tunnel over the user’s own 4G connection, automatically determining the location via the device’s own GPS system and using this to position the ‘detonation’ on the map interface. Naturally this is a little more practical than walking into a meeting with a grenade in your jacket pocket.

Due to legal concerns the author will not provide a server for using this application. However, all code will be published for study and so that others can set up their own service, should they find a worthy need for it.

Germany faces a machine from hell – FT.com

Much of the current German-bashing is wild and unfair. But there is one respect in which Germany does bear responsibility for the current crisis. Germany was in the forefront of the countries pushing for the creation of the euro. And yet it is increasingly apparent that creating a single currency, without a single nation behind it, is at the root of the current crisis.

When Chancellor Merkel talks of the need for “political union” in Europe as the long-term solution to the current crisis, she is acknowledging this design flaw. But political union must involve deep losses of national sovereignty. And the current crisis shows that Greeks, Germans and Italians do have one important thing in common – a deep aversion to ceding control of their national budgets.

The result is that the euro is in a dangerous and unstable position. The actions that are being urged on Germany are unreasonable. But Germany’s own solution – structural reform now, political union later – is unworkable.

Amid all these dangers, German officials remain outwardly calm. They shrug off the insults, while continuing to pledge financial aid to southern Europe and to make the case for supply-side reforms as the only long-term solution to the woes of the European periphery.

Behind the scenes, however, some of the brightest minds in the German government have a sense of deep foreboding. Twice in the past year I have found myself sitting next to different senior German officials at a dinner who have proceeded to tell me that the whole single currency was a terrible mistake. Speaking of the euro, one of my companions said: “It seems to me that we have invented a machine from hell that we cannot turn off.” The image was so bleak and Strangelovian that I laughed. But, I am afraid, it’s not really very funny.

Il working paper di cui parla l’articolo del WSJ, Span of Control and Span of Activity, è stato pubblicato l’11 febbraio 2012 dalla Harvard Business School da 4 autori, di cui 3 italiani (Oriana Bandiera, Andrea Prat, Raffaella Sadun e Julie Wulf). Gli autori hanno indagato un campione di 65 CEO (direttori generali) presenti a un corso della Harvard Business School, per 2/3 di imprese americane e per il resto di aziende europee e asiatiche. Con riferimento a una settimana rappresentativa, per intervista diretta e attraverso l’agenda tenuta dall’assistente personale, gli autori sono stati in grado di ricostruire la giornata e la settimana di lavoro di questi manager con una “definizione” temporale di 15 minuti. In media, gli intervistati hanno lavorato per 55 ore la settimana, di cui 18 spese in riunioni, più di 3 in telefonate e 5 in pranzi di lavoro. Al lavoro da soli erano dedicate in media 6 ore su 55. Circa 3/4 del tempo speso in riunioni è dedicato a riunioni interne, e l’impegno temporale cresce al crescere del numero di collaboratori che rispondono direttamente al CEO.

Interessante la discrepanza tra la percezione dei CEO rispetto al loro impiego del tempo e le evidenze emergenti dalle agende tenute dagli assistenti: i CEO pensano di impiegare più razionalmente il loro tempo e di dedicarne meno alle riunioni. Eppure, l’82% delle riunioni risulta essere stato programmato in anticipo, e la maggior parte delle riunioni interne vede coinvolta una pluralità di partecipanti.

Lo studio più recente riprende i temi di una ricerca precedente, condotta all’estero da 4 ricercatori italiani (Oriana Bandiera, Luigi Guiso, Andrea Prat e Raffaella Sadun; 3 sono coautori dello studio riassunto in precedenza) e “generosamente finanziata” (lo dicono gli autori) dalla Fondazione Roberto Debenedetti. La ricerca si era concentrata sui vertici di 94 imprese italiane e circola in rete, per quello che ho potuto vedere io, in almeno due versioni, peraltro pressoché identiche: una, datata 8 ottobre 2010, la trovate qui; l’altra, datata 25 febbraio 2011, si scarica da qui.

Il risultato saliente della ricerca “italiana” è che l’allocazione del tempo dei direttori è fortemente correlata alla produttività e alla profittabilità dell’impresa. A sua volta, la performance aziendale dipende in misura cruciale dalle scelte dei vertici: le riunioni esterne non danno un apporto significativo alla produttività, mentre le riunioni interne si associano a performance migliori.

In his nonfiction, Wallace most closely resembled another writer before him, a man who was also considered something other than a journalist: Hunter S. Thompson. Both writers took reportage a step further than the literary techniques of Gay Talese, Joan Didion and the New Journalism. Yes, both Thompson and Wallace shirked objectivity, happily injecting their own commentary and asides into factual reportage, but today scores of journalists reject objectivity (Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi, Esquire’s Tom Junod or, to a lesser extent, Jon Krakauer, who certainly makes his own views clear by the end of “Where Men Win Glory”).

What Thompson did differently that Wallace emulated (consciously or not) is more about a slippery definition of honesty and truth. An essay Wallace wrote about attending the Adult Video News (AVN) Awards opened the collection “Consider the Lobster.” It’s a rollicking tour in which the author plays representative for the reader’s disgust and fascination (when a girl meets Wallace and brags about small valves in her new breast implants that allow her to adjust the size of the breasts by adding or draining fluid, she raises her arms to show him and Wallace can only write, “There really are what appear to be valves”).

Una guerra a colpi di sequestri, oscuramenti e censure è un rischio che la Rete non può correre oltre.

Se lo si ritiene utile ed irrinunciabile, si individui un procedimento per la rimozione delle singole espressioni eventualmente ritenute diffamatorie ma guai a dimenticare che, in una società democratica, è meglio che restino online 80 caratteri di informazione illecita, piuttosto che vengano rimossi milioni di carattere di informazione lecita.
