Sbagliando s'impera

Ho scritto di recente di aver assistito soltanto 2 volte a concerti dei King Crimson, nel 2000, nella formazione Fripp-Belew-Gunn-Mastellotto. Ma non sono state certo quelle le uniche occasioni in cui ho potuto sentire suonare dal vivo Robert Fripp. In questo post e in uno successivo vorrei testimoniare delle 2 volte che – a distanza di 15 anni – l’ho sentito suonare con la sua League of Crafty Guitarists.

Andiamo con ordine.

Non tutti sanno che cos’è la League of Crafty Guitarists e allora ce lo facciamo spiegare dal loro sito:

The League of Crafty Guitarists is the performance-ensemble of Guitar Craft, a group which includes players from all over the world. [Ora la scuola è chiusa]
The group performs on acoustic steel string guitars tuned in the New Standard Tuning (NST), which extends the sonic range of the traditional guitar tuning.
Its repertoire is constantly evolving and is open to all styles. The music remains true to a common conceptual approach, and includes a rich variety of original compositions. A characteristic and outstanding part of the repertoire are improvised and/or written group compositions, known as Circulations.
The LCG was founded in 1986 under the direction of Robert Fripp and toured worldwide until 1991. During this first period of activity several albums were released: “Live 1”, “Get Crafty”, “Live 2-Live At Victoriaville Festival”, “Show Of Hands” and “Live 3-Intergalactic Boogie Express”.
The LCG returned to live performance in January 2002 under the direction of Hernan Nunez, and has been touring and recording in Europe and Latin America since then, the release of a live album featuring the highlights of these tours is now in process.
Robert Fripp Soundscapes & The LCG toured Italy, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and the US between June 2006 and July 2009.

Il concerto romano del 15 marzo 1991 era al famoso (all’epoca) Tendastrisce, un vero tendone fa circo “parcheggiato” nei pressi della vecchia Fiera di Roma, vicino alla via Cristoforo Colombo, grosso modo a metà strada tra il centro e l’Eur. [Scopro soltanto adesso che la storica struttura esiste ancora, ma in un altro luogo, in via Giorgio Perlasca 69.]

Il 15 marzo 1991 era un venerdì: ricordo una temperatura ancora quasi invernale (secondo i parametri romani: sui 15 °C) e le strade umide. Secondo Wolfram Alpha la mattina era piovuto per un paio d’ore tra le 10 e mezzogiorno.

C’era pochissima gente. Neppure io ricordo come ero venuto a conoscenza del concerto. Non avevo un’idea precisa della musica che avrebbero suonato e ne sono rimasto incantato.

All’uscita ho comprato al banchetto del merchandising i CD della LCG che vendevano e una t-shirt. Ve l’ho detto che c’era pochissima gente: così ho ottenuto dal leggendariamente scontroso Robert Fripp che me l’autografasse con un pennarello. Naturalmente la conservo religiosamente.

Recorded against the backdrop of his deteriorating relationships with his management company, the spring tour of 1991 was only financed when Fripp was forced to sell of his rarest guitar to foot the bill.
Happily the music transcends such worldly concerns and is undoubtedly one of the strongest collections of CG material ever presented. Replete with the crystalline beauty of the circulations, arrangements of Bach Preludes (and arguably the definitive recording of Bert Lams’ stunning Asturias), the album also shudders from the astonishing power of the ensemble on pieces such as Driving Force (containing a motif Fripp utilised in Sunday All Over The World and later on The ConstrucKction of Light). The early life-signs of the beast that would be Thrak are also to be found within.
Containing all the members of the California Trio this is an exemplary and impressive collection of the League’s mesmerising qualities in full flow. Originally released on CD in July 1995, the album is now out of print. Setlist
