Sbagliando s'impera

Una digressione che avevo promesso nella recensione di The Weight of Numbers.

Mi districherò in questa storia complicata utilizzando le parole di Richard Dawkins in The God Delusion.

“The anthropic principle was named by the British mathematician Brandon Carter in 1974 and expanded by the physicists John Barrow and Frank Tipler in their book an the subject. It is a strange fact, incidentally, that religious apologists love the anthropic principle. For some reason that makes no sense at all, they think it supports their case. Precisely the opposite is true. The anthropic principle, like natural selection, is an alternative to the design hypothesis. It provides a rational, design-free explanation for the fact that we find ourselves in a situation propitious to our existence. I think the confusion arises in the religious mind because the anthropic principle is only ever mentioned in the context of the problem that it solves, namely that we live in a life-friendly place. What the religious mind then fails to grasp is that two candidate solutions are offered to the problem. God is one. The anthropic principle is the other. They are alternatives“.

Se vi viene da grattarvi la testa, non preoccupatevi: il ragionamento è solido, ma controintuitivo.

Un altro esempio può servirvi da ponteggio per arrampicarvi sul principio antropico.

Avete mai pensato che, per quanto strano possa sembrare, siete i discendenti di una catena ininterrotta di progenitori che sono sopravvissuti abbastanza a lungo da mettere al mondo dei figli, a loro volta vissuti abbastanza a lungo da mettere al mondo dei figli, e così via, in linea diretta da Adamo ed Eva (o da Lucy) fino a vostro padre e a vostra madre?

C’è stata la peste nera raccontata dal Boccaccio e quella dei Promessi Sposi. La mortalità infantile era spaventosa fino a 100 anni fa. Niente! A voi è andata bene: i vostri avi sono sopravvissuti abbastanza a lungo per riprodursi. Credete nella verità letterale della strage degli innocenti ordinata da Erode? Niente paura, è certo che non discendete da nessuno di quei morti in tenera età. Cecilia (“scendeva dalla soglia di uno di quegli usci…”) è morta vergine? sicuramente non siete suoi pronipoti!

Milioni di rami secchi nell’albero genealogico di Adamo ed Eva (o di Lucy), ma voi siete sicuramente su un virgulto verdeggiante…
